Accounts
Since you may be new to UC Berkeley there are several services you should activate to take full advantage of MIDS and university-wide resources.
CalNet ID
Click here to activate your CalNet ID, which will be your authentication for all things UC Berkeley. Remember, you are a full graduate student with the same privileged access to online resources that on-campus students have. After activating your CalNet please also configure Berkeley’s VPN so you can begin to get free access to online journals through the UC Berkeley Library.
bConnected
Click here to activate your bConnected Google account. This will give you access to your calnet@berkeley.edu
email, calendar, and several familiar cloud services, including nigh-unlimited storage through bdrive.berkeley.edu!
Because it is a Berkeley organization account, docs created with your bConnected login offer increased security permissions that protect your and your peer’s privacy, identity, and intellectual property. Most Google resources created by your instructors can only be accessed while logged-in to your calnet@berkeley.edu
account, and we will ignore requests to share them with any other account. Similarly we ask that you do not create content for this course using your personal or any other Google account. We also ask that, to the best of your ability, you share content with other students by using their bConnected/CalNet user names. Please help protect your own and your peers’ intellectual property!
To avoid mistakes if you use multiple Google accounts:
- Add your bConnected/CalNet account to your Google device account switcher
OR
- Open a private or incognito window and authenticate with CalNet before accessing the Google document or service.
I School Intranet
Take a moment to fill out your I School online profile via the intranet settings menu. So many profiles, but this is a great one for peddling your UCB cred!
Slack
Slack is the chat room du jour for the I School, so mosey over to the I School organization and check out the chatter. Please pick a username with your actual name in it to make it easier for people to search for you. It’s also a good idea to fill out your profile here with a pic that looks like you. #somanyprofiles
Soon after you submit the questionnaire you’ll be added to a private channel for my W201 sections (not the same as the #w201
channel). This, rather than the ISVC, is where we will do most of our business.
